Rui Pereira

Rui Pereira is a Portuguese product designer. His endless curiosity for different cultures and new ways of thinking has turned him into a globetrotter: he has lived in Valencia and Milan, where he worked for Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola. Today, he resides in Copenhagen, where he serves as Head of Design and Visual Direction for the Danish furniture brand Hay.

Through his experiences with various industries, Rui has developed a critical perspective on the industrial processes used in design and, more broadly, in modern society. His constant search for new perspectives and diverse experiences drives him to redefine and propose product typologies that establish an immediate connection with users while also raising awareness of important contemporary issues.

In his projects, Rui explores the potential of materials and production techniques, using a sharp visual language that is reflected in his honest and relevant designs.

ALGAE

The random direction of these brush strokes is reminiscent of algae leaves, floating in the ocean stream at a slow pace.

BRUSH AZULEJO

Referencing the famous Portuguese façade tiles, a single handmade curling brush stroke has been digitally manipulated to create an infinite diagonal grid.

BRUSH DUO

An exercise in precision, the controlled brushstrokes of this pattern have been slightly displaced, revealing a complementary or contrasting colour.

DOTS

By overlapping and intersecting an infinity of dots in contrasting colours, an intriguing moiré effect is created, resembling an Op art piece.

FADED LINES I

By using a gradient line pattern, an additional volume layer has been added to the archetypal stripe motif. To further emphasize the potential of creating a three dimensional landscape, a randomized version, featuring different stripe width has been developed, giving the larger ones a column like presence.

SCALES

These sequences of arched brushstrokes creates a scale-like pattern, a common motif in Japanese silk textiles, here it has been repurposed in a larger scale.

BRUSH WAVE

A reinterpretation of the classical striped pattern, where the full lines have been substituted by a vertically repeated wavy brush stroke.
